DescriptionThis account was part of the former New Zealand Room's Vertical Files. Anne Brake (Kerley) Cressey’s Fred Brake and his boats, compiled in August 2010, records her memories of her father, Fred Roland Brake. It covers his childhood at Milford, Auckland, early interest in sailing, work as a carpenter, farming at Matamata, Aongatete and Katikati, and later employment in Auckland.
The account describes Brake’s establishment of the “Seaway” Jersey Stud at Katikati, his wartime service as an Air Force guard at Tauranga Airport, the construction and use of the launch Seaway, and his hearing of the Ranui distress call at the entrance to Tauranga Harbour and notifying police. It also records his later work for the Auckland Harbour Board in the Panmure area and his death in 1976.
