Taratoa, Hēnare Wiremu, 1830-1864 (Person)

SummaryA Ngāi Te Rangi leader, teacher and Christian scholar. Born at Ōpounui, Rangiwaea Island, to Hera and Hoani. Educated at St John’s College, Auckland, he later taught at Ōtaki. He married Emily Te Rua in 1850 and Rahapa Te Kawa in 1854, and had four recorded children. Taratoa drafted the Poteriwhi Code of Conduct before the Battle of Gate Pā and was associated with giving water to the mortally wounded Lieutenant-Colonel Henry Booth. He was killed at Te Ranga on 21 June 1864 and later reinterred at Mission Cemetery, Tauranga.SourcesDixon, Ngahuia, Dictionary of New Zealand Biography.
