Magee, Thomas Joseph (Tom), 1912-2003 (Person)

SummaryThomas Joseph (Tom) Magee (1912-2003) was a butcher and sawmiller of Mount Maunganui. Born at Cobden on the West Coast, he was the son of Thomas Joseph Magee and Sarah Hovendan (née Hunter). He worked at Matatā before moving to Mount Maunganui in the early 1930s, where he acquired Tom Paterson's butchery. The transfer of Paterson's slaughterhouse licence to Magee was reported in December 1934.

In 1938 he married Laura Frances (Linda) Bennett. They had five children: Janice, Barry, Barbara, Kevin, and Patricia.

Magee later worked as a truck driver, carpenter, and sawmiller. He acquired the Terrace Avenue sawmill established by Goldie Seabourne, first operating with Mick Smith and later on his own. The mill processed native timber and pine and was an early adopter of boric treatment for pine. He also leased adjoining Catholic Church land for timber stacking and drying.
The family lived at 19 Terrace Avenue. Magee died in 2003, aged 90. A joint oral-history interview with Tom and Linda Magee records local butchery and sawmilling, and the growth of Mount Maunganui businesses.SourcesTauranga Photo News No. 15, page 55Interview with Laura and Thomas Magee: Te Ao Mārama - Tauranga City Libraries AV 22-007/14Scott, Robert "Mount Maunganui, A History of the Land and Early Settlers from 1864", pp. 220-221Bay of Plenty Times, 15 December 1934, p. 3: slaughterhouse licence-transfer application
