The sign reads; 'Tauranga's waterfront has long been a safe anchorage and a special place for people to connect with the water and harbour. Maori prized this place for its climate and abundant resources, and later it became the centre for European settlement in the region. More than just a beach, The Strand was a port, a trading place, a place to recreate and a place to relax. In the days before road and rail transport, it connected Tauranga to the wider world'.
