It was owned by Anne Sims, widow of war veteran James Sims, who fought at Gate Pā and friend of Mrs Greer. Land was bought from the estate of Anne Sims by the Borough Council. It was one of the sites considered for a Town Hall in 1913. Charlie Hardy, general carrier, has a house which can just be seen at the edge of the Hotel wall.
