Strand Sculpture Symposium (2012)

The inaugural Craig's Investment Partners' Sculpture Symposium will be held on Tauranga's newly developed waterfront during this year's Garden and Art Festival.

This exciting art event involving 15 sculptors from Tauranga and further afield will begin on November 5th and run until November 11th.

The symposium is a free public event to be enjoyed by all.

The sculptors begin with large blocks of Ōamaru stone (limestone), Maratoto stone (andesite) and wood that is sculpted and carved over the 6 day period.

The completed works of art are to be auctioned off on Sunday the 11th November at 11 a.m.

Symposium organiser Rex O'Brien says, "To watch the works in process and being able to talk with the artists throughout the week is a great way to bring art into the public arena.

"Participating artists will also be exhibiting previous work in the Garden and Art Festival's Urban Rooftop Garden".

At the symposium Rex will be sculpting a new work to create an interesting interpretation of our local history.

Tauranga's Nic Clegg, who usually creates masterful works in steel, and the Mount Maunganui artist known as 'Space' will be participating in their first symposium of this kind.

Visitors can also see nationally and internationally recognized hard stone carvers Anna Korver, Jocelyn Pratt and Claire Sadler. They are experts in using light texture and form in their Maratoto stone works.

Other artists participating are Steve Molloy, Trevor Nathan, Logan Shipgood, Allan Grabham, Andrew Deadman, Davie Mc Ghie, Peter Cramond, Ashley Grant and Pita Rua Lagan.

Be sure to jot down the dates on your art calendar especially the auction time at 11 a.m. on Sunday 11th November. 

This is a great opportunity to see stone and wood being publically transformed using hammers, saws, chisels, grinders and sanders.
