Sculptural Creations Excite

Included in the exhibition will be well-known sculptors, Peter Cramond, Thomas Hansen, Nic Clegg, Ashley Grant, Vivian Keenan, Trevor Clist and Debbie Allen.

The reason for the word “creations” in the headline is that every stall holder at the Cargo Shed will also be creating something for the exhibition.

Kathy Sass, Manager of the Cargo Shed, has asked that ’everyone go out on a limb for this one’ and allow their creative juices to flow within their own genres.

There will also be a “door” category where artists have been invited to create an exciting work of art on a door.  Artists Nick Eggleston, Kevin Butcher and Heike De La Rey, amongst others, will be exhibiting in this area.

Kathy came up with the idea of the exhibition as a way of attracting more local visitors to the Cargo Shed.

She says,"Many of Tauranga’s residents have not seen the new revamped Cargo Shed and how amazing it is". 

"If they come to view exhibitions like this they’ll discover beautiful artistic wares made by our local artists.

"The exhibition is even more unusual when you consider the variety of artistic talent involved".

The Cargo Shed displays bone carving, greenstone, women’s knitwear and weaving, art, jewellery, vinyl photo art and ceramics.

Some of the exhibition sculptures will be very contemporary, while others will be decorative or involve assembling a variety of objects.

The fibre artists will feature a yarn ’bombed’ gate.  Knitting, crochet and French knitting is on its way already with visitors to the Shed being invited to knit a few rows.

The finished works will be displayed down the length of The Cargo Shed’s main aisle.   

In addition to the sculptures and creations, the evening will also be the opening of an exhibition of acrylic paintings by well known Tauranga artist Nancy Frazer..  Her exhibition will run concurrently with the sculpture exhibition.

The profits gained from the sale of the artworks will be shared equally between Hospice and the Cargo Shed Marketing Fund.

The exhibition will open at 5.30 pm, Thursday 21st March and everyone is welcome to attend. 

The Cargo Shed sculpture exhibition will run until April 7th.
