The Rena Oil Spill
SummaryIn the early hours of the morning on Wednesday 5 October 2011, the fully laden container ship Rena strikes the Astrolabe Reef, about 12 nautical miles off the coast of Tauranga and four nautical miles from Motiti Island.

However, as time goes on and the weather deteriorates, significant leaks of heavy oil become apparent. A week after the grounding the situation is much worse. The ship is listing. Containers have fallen from its decks, creating a hazard for shipping, and oil is smothering wildlife and fouling Tauranga beaches.
