Main BodyHere I stand

Tall and strong

Overlooking towns and cities

A wondrous sight

A day turns to night

Sunsets lighting the sky gold

Turning young to old

To watch the river run by my feet

To listen to the song of the tui

To see the green of the trees

The colour of the flowers

The bees hum, to work for our delight

A paradise of tranquillity

What a sight to see

A place where I will always be

‘Mount Pirongia’ was written for the Memoir & Local History Competition 2011, run annually by the New Zealand Society of Authors Bay of Plenty Region with support from Tauranga Writers. It was entered in the Young Writers (13-18) category. Catherine Smith was only twelve when she entered.
