My wife, Bev and I had the privilege of meeting Alan and Jess North in 1965... when I had a job as engine driver at Manukau timber mill...at that time we were expecting our first baby... Alan was our doctor.. and we attended the Presbyterian Māori Synod Church at Te Whaiti. I well remember calling in to see him on the way to Murapara when our Bev's contractions started...I returned home later that night when things stopped but was woke in the early hours by Alan.... telling me I had a baby daughter... 10th June 1965. He called in later.. and told me.. a meal would be on the table for me before visiting Bev... and that continued for the 10 days Bev had in the maternity annexe... Jess prepared a huge lovely meal.. and I was treated just as a family member...
Some years later... after they had moved to Athenree, our third daughter was looking for accommodation near Katikati.. so I rang Jess to see if she knew someone who could provide board.. Her reply... without hesitation... yes.. she will come here... Our daughter spent some time boarding with Jess until she moved to Hamilton.. Jess showed such kindness to our daughter which Cilla remembers and talks about to this day...
We will never forget our friendship with the Norths... they were very special people in our memories.

By: Pae Koroki29th Nov 2023 3:20PMMy name is John North, the son of Allan and Jess North.
...
You have mentioned 3 farewells but not the one at Te Whaiti, which if memory serves me right was at Waikotikoti Marae.
Also Dad's MBE was awarded some years before he died, I think 1967. The way in which the article records this suggests that Dad was given the award after he died, or that Mum became aware of it before she died.
