The memorial was originally erected by the Tauranga Historical Society fifty years ago at the battle site during the Battle of Gate Pā Centennial in 1964. It was unveiled by the Chief Justice, the Re. Hon. Sir Harold Barrowclough on Tuesday, 28 April 1964, the eve of the commemoration. The memorial was dedicated by the Rev Brown Turei.
