Born in Wiltshire, UK, Bill Cross married Alice Vera Gifford daughter of William H. Gifford, owner of the 'Bay of Plenty Times'. They were engaged before Bill left for the First World War where he served in the New Zealand Army at the Somme. He worked for his father-in-law at the newspaper and eventually became Managing Director. In 1993 he received the Tauranga Heritage Award.
