DateMarch 1955-December 1982Collection SummaryThe Journal of the Tauranga Historical Society was first published in March 1955 and merged with Historical Review (1956-), a Whakatane & District Historical Society publication in 1982. Through its publication, the Tauranga Historical Society aimed to gather and share historical information relating to the Western Bay of Plenty with its members.DescriptionPublication was irregular, varying between 1-4 issues per year. The first 15 issues were 205mm x 155mm format. Issues 16-50 were 259mm x 200mm, and issues 51-67 290mm x 205mm. The first issue contained only 9 pages. While several issues exceeded 50 pages, they usually ranged between 25 and 35 pages.

The Journal contains a variety of articles, which are the result of documentary and oral history research undertaken by many people. Since the time of their writing and publication, perspectives on the past have changed. The presentation of facts and background information will include attitudes and interpretations of events, individuals, groups and institutions that may not match how we see the past now, or in the future.
