In 2000 a project began to move the Taioma from where it rested at the Historic Village, with the intention of creating a dive site off the South-eastern side of Mōtītī Island. A 128 wheel trailer was fitted underneath the tub before it began a journey down Takitimu expressway to the slipway at the northern side of the harbour bridge. Once afloat once more, the tug was itself tugged across the harbour and out to Mōtītī where it was scuttled. Over 150 artefacts from the Taioma, including the great prop (formerly outside the RSA on Cameron Road, and now currently at Sulphur Point), steam whistle and port holes, were put up for auction to help pay for the project. Four men from the steam group at Ferrymead Heritage Park travelled to Tauranga to strip the tug of small materials such as gauges for their museum. FormatPrintSource of AcquisitionGraham Macgregor
