The station was operational from 1981 but immediately experienced the collapse of the eastern bank of the canal supplying water to the station. This was replaced by an extended penstock (visible descending the slope) and a new forebay. Taken May 8, 1996 by David Vernon for Kaimai Hydropower with information provided by David Hyde and Roger Jamieson.
