Caption on the photo: For just on fifty years the Ōmanawa power station has remained unique as the only underground power station in N. Z. It was enlarged in 1920 from 150 KW to 850 KW by installation of the generating set, shown in the centre of the picture. The overhead concrete structure became necessary in order that the roof could be adequately supported before the transept on the left could be excavated.
