Date1916Reference NumberPhoto 99-739DescriptionOn 19 July 1919, the end of World War I was marked in Tauranga and throughout New Zealand with a Peace Day Commemoration. At 10am all the bells in town were set ringing for five minutes and at 10. 30 those taking park in the procession assembled. At 11am the Drum Major led the band, following by cars carrying Māori war veterans, then returned solders, town dignitaries and decorated floats and cars. School children held flags and were dressed in the costumes of various Allied countries who took part in the war. The route was; Cameron Road, 1st Avenue, The Strand, Harington Street and Willow Street, concluding at the Town Hall where formal speeches were given. Several local businesses were decorated. At 12noon the tolling bell signalled five minutes silence in memory of the fallen, followed by the Last Post and National Anthem. 800 children then had lunch in the Town Hall, then took part in sporting activities at The Domain. Two cinema sessions from 6pm were given, with free entry for children under 14. At 7. 30pm a display of rockets could be seen on Mauao, before three Tauranga women lit 70 tar barrels on the summit at 8pm. Answering fires came from Ōmanawa, Ōtānewainuku, Mōtītī, Maketū, Pikowai, Matatā, Mt. Edgecumbe, Te He Katikati Heads, Pawharangi, Athenree, Ōmokoroa, Te Puna and Whakamārama. A Peace Monument on the summit of Mauao, erected in 1920, commemorates the event. Source of Acquisition
