Bradley, son of mill engineer Hugh Bradley: 'The Damns & Bradleys on top Anne and Pat, in front Daph and Fred Damn, Mickie [Hugh jr] & Hugh Bradley, a fairly large log, but not the biggest, my father had a photo (which I could not find) of me sitting on top of a log with Fred Damn in front, Fred stood about six feet tall, and he had driven his axe in the log as high as he could reach and it was still at least two feet from the top, this log had to be blown apart to fit in the breaking down saw, which could take a ten foot diameter log. At the far left can be seen the top of a pole. . . and left of centre, this pole carries the whistle line and the tail rope, which is seen running from the left, behind the top left log, then on to the pole. The tail rope was used to pull the main rope back to the booms. ' Fred Damn was the 'ropey', whose job was to attach the hauler's main rope to the logs and signal the driver by means of a whistle line. Daph was his wife. C. 1936-40.
