The photograph is of Wiremu Tamihana Tarapipi Te Waharoa, Chief of Ngati Haua, seated holding what appears to be a taiaha.. In this photograph Tarapipi is wearing the same shirt as he wore in a series of photos taken by John Kinder in 1863. It is likely that this is also a Kinder photograph taken at the same time. John Kinder made three photographic portraits of Wiremu Tamihana in 1863, one shows him standing holding a musket, one a mere and one a taiaha. (John Kinder's N.Z.) 1935.0058 appears to be the photograph in this series, of him holding the taiaha.Physical DescriptionArt. Picture
