The black and white photograph depicts a wooden building in the foreground and a house with a verandah behind a white picket fence in the background. The photograph is mounted with a cream coloured mounting board, however this board is not cut to fit the frame the photograph is housed in. It would appear that the picture has been assembled by Duff Maxwell. the photograph has a white border on its lower edge, written on this border is: "The Native Institution Te Papa Tauranga - J.Kinder 1865". In the 1972 Catalogue of the A.N. Brown Collection, this photograph was recorded as a loose photograph.
