The Mayor after reminding the Council of the Jubilee celebration on June 22nd and of the fact that at the request of a number of Maoris a photograph had been taken of a well known chief, Te Mete Raukawa, and himself, the Mayor, and that a copy with an explanatory letter had been forwarded to Her Majesty through the proper channels, read a reply received by himself from the Under Secretary of State, through the Governor and the Colonial Secretary, acknowledging receipt and stating that the photograph bad been laid before Her Majesty. I?he reply was as follows :
— Downing Street, 2nd September, 1897. My Lord, — I have the honour to inform you that I have received I letter from Mr C, A. Clarke, Mayor of Tauranga, describing a meeting celebration of the completion of the sixtieth year of Her Majesty's Reign, to which he invited the townspeople of Tauranga and the Maoris of the District. I shall be glad if you will inform Mr Clarke that the photograph which accompanied his letter has been laid before the Queen, who was gratified by this evidence of the loyalty of the Maoris and of the contentment in which they live under her rule. — I have, etc., (Signed) John BRANSTON, For the Secretary of State. Governor The Right Honourable The Earl of Ranfurly, K.C.M.G.
The Council resolved unanimously that the correspondence be included in the transactions of the Council and asked His Worship to present the Council with a copy of the photograph referred to with a view to it being hung in the Council Chamber.
