Reference Number2008.0411DescriptionPhotograph of the great rangatira Wiremu Kingi Te Moki, of Taranaki iwi, with a kaitaka (cloak), wrapped around him, holding a mere in his hand. He is seated next to a table with a small vase of flowers on it. The black and white photograph is mounted in a grey card folder. There are no photographer's details. On the back of the card folder is written in pencil: "Wirimu Kineu(?) Matakaka". The rangatira was known as Te Matakatea (far sighted or clear eyed one), due to his accuracy with the musket. He successfully defended south Taranaki at Te Namu pa in 1833 and Waimate pa in 1834 against massively superior Waikato forces. In 1840 he defeated Tauteka of Ngati Tuwharetoa at Patoka pa, and faced the famous warrior Iwikau Te Heuheu on the Whanganui River in 1840. (The Musket Wars, by R.D.
