Photograph of Devonport Road number 46. Various signs can be made out, including “Teasey's Building”, “IdolNAIL”, “Kayya”, “Pluto Juice bar” and “Repertoire”.
William Thomas Teasey emigrated from Co.Tyrone, Ireland to work for his uncle J Wright's drapery in Tauranga. He later became a land agent with an office in a small brick building on the site of the building that bears his name. It was built in 1939 in the art deco style that was popular in this part of Devonport Road. This style featured the stepped façade with chevron details, raised plaster lettering and a rectangular patterned band along the top of the parapet. When the building was first built it provided retail premises on the ground floor, offices upstairs including a room for a piano teacher, with some accommodation at the rear of the first floor. The Tauranga Rowing Club began with meetings in a shed at the back of Teasey’s building before they moved to more appropriate premises on the water’s edge.
Recently the building has been strengthened to meet earthquake requirements. The present tenants are "Idol Nail" and "Pluto".
Teasey married Ada the eldest daughter of Joseph and Kate Brain, a boat builder and prominent resident of the borough. They had two sons, Harry who had the garage next door and Wilson who became a men's outfitter keeping to the family tradition of the cloth trade.
