Media updates
MEDIA UPDATE 7.00am 17 November:
Three containers (total) have now been successfully removed from the stern of the Rena onto the crane barge ST60
Weather is currently calm and at this stage conducive to ongoing operations
There have been no fresh reports of oiling on beaches overnight, and operations will continue in other areas today
Teams of spill responders remain on standby and ready to swing into action should any more oil come ashore.
The planned media trip out to the Rena on HMNZS Pukaki will go ahead as scheduled at 9.30am today (see below).
MEDIA ADVISORY 6.00am 17 November:
There will be an opportunity for those media who were unable to go on yesterday's cancelled boat trip out to the Rena to do so today (Thursday 17 November) at 9.30am.
Those media with spaces confirmed on board are:
TV3
TVNZ
NZ Herald
NZ Geographic
AF/p
RNZ
Central News Photo Agency
BOP Times
Fairfax media
Sun Live
Freelance
If any listed media cannot take part, please notify the MNZ media team on 0800 774 554 immediately.
The trip will go ahead unless weather or other conditions prevent safe operations.
Media will begin being transferred at 9.30am by rigid hulled inflatable boat (RHIB) from the public wharf at the end of Salisbury Ave, Mt Maunganui, to the Navy vessel HMNZS Pukaki, which will provide transport out to the Rena from the harbour mouth.
As only one RHIB is able to operate at a time, there will be a delay in transferring all media to the Pukaki.
Estimated total trip time is approximately 3.5 hours.
MNZ's Salvage Unit Manager will be available to talk through operations and for interviews.
Media however need to be aware that for operational or safety reasons, there may be no container removal activity taking place at the time of the visit.
Media need to be at the tug jetty at the wharf at the end of Salisbury Ave near Pilot Bay, Mt Maunganui, at 9.30am sharp, where they will be met by Navy personnel and assisted on board. Appropriate clothing should be worn.
If the trip is not going ahead, we will notify you as soon as possible.
MEDIA REMINDER:
It is critical to safe operations that the aerial and marine exclusion zone around Rena is observed and respected.
Entering the exclusion zone can seriously impact on the recovery operation and put those working on salvaging the ship at risk. It is also an offence to enter the exclusion zone and anyone found breaching this zone could be fined up to $20,000. For details, visit http://www.boprc.govt.nz/news-centre/media-releases/october-2011/rena-exclusion-zone-extended/
MEDIA CONFERENCES:
Rena media conferences held daily at 3:30pm
The 3.30pm press conferences will be held outside the incident command centre at the old Foodtown on the corner of Cameron Road and Fourteenth Avenue.

Attention media: the correct procedure for media wanting access to the forward operations base for the on-water oil spill and salvage operations is as follows:
Please DO NOT go to the waterfront expecting to be given access. Please contact the Response Media Team on 0800 774 554 to arrange access, and we will coordinate this. Any media not doing this will be turned away.
The forward operations area contains significant and numerous hazards. Media cleared to visit the base must BRING the following: - a high visibility vest- hard hat- life jacket- suitable footwear
Anyone not bringing or wearing suitable protective clothing will be denied access. The response team does not have spare gear available for media.
