S MISSION STATION, MAKETŪ (Lettie) (1848-1904) is a New Zealand born daughter to American born Quaker parents Rev. Seymour M. Spencer (1812-1898) and Ellen Spencer nee Dudley (1817-1882). She finished her education at the Rev. B. Y. Ashwell's mission station (Taupiri) under a governess. Lettie, some siblings and mother took refuge in Tauranga during the Battles of Gate Pā and Te Ranga. She was known in the Maketū, Ōpōtiki, Rotorua, Tauranga, Waipā and Tarawera regions as a result of her fathers missionary activities. She played the harmonium (BOPT 26 June 1871), spoke Te Reo Māori and could act as an interpreter. A hip problem from birth meant she walked with a limp and she refused all offers of marriage. She died aged 56, on 7 June 1904 at Waimate North, where she had gone to spend the winter with her old friend Hettie Clarke.
