First European activity on this site was a timber yard then in 1876 Conway, a local builder, built the first Commercial Hotel. Fire destroyed the hotel and other buildings in The Strand in 1916. A new hotel designed by H Clemson was built by Ashton & Crump of concrete construction including the ceiling/floor of the second level. In 1956 the name changed to St. Armand (patron saint of barmen) and in more recent years it became backpacker accommodation. Cobb & Co a franchise restaurant was on the ground floor for some years but closed around 2015.
