Originally it was not clear if he was the marshal, the flag marshal or one of the motorcyclists about to leap on their bike. In 2021 he was recognised as "the starter with the flag" noting the race was staggered with the fastest riders starting later. "May be Totoroa st. Hewletts rd. Tasman Quay circuit" (Cliff Kingston).
