Lis Eynon: Painting from the Heart
Go Home Brian. Acrylic on canvas.
Although always creative, it wasn”t until her second child was born and the demands of motherhood were firmly set in place that Lis felt a yearning for self-expression and discovered painting. Three years on she is a passionate and dedicated artist.
“I feel lucky to have found something I feel so passionate about. A lot of people never feel this passionate about anything. I know that I”ll be doing this forever.”
Lis paints from her heart often without an image, hence the title of her exhibition “Art from the Heart”.
Her paintings are bold, soulful, emotive works reminiscent of the European expressionists. Her use of vibrant colour and bold brush strokes engage the viewer as they are invited into a journey that often reflects personal elements of her life.
Lis's paintings are the voice of her emotions and her works have a surging vibrancy that they are often described as “alive”.
Her “expressionist” style reflects her own sensitivities and inner feelings rather than representing the external world.
Lis exhibits at Harrisons Gallery Whangamatā, 4 Arts Sake Ōhope and The Art Boutique and Creative Tauranga where her first solo exhibition is being held.
“Have you seen Brian lately…
I wonder what he could be up to?” Acrylic on canvas.
At the close of the day, Brian decides he really would like to go home. Brian is a metaphor who features in about half a dozen of my paintings and he tells a story of my personal life but it is general enough that the viewer could apply it to aspects of their own life and interpret it in different ways. There is a story in each piece.
When I ask Lis about her painting she says, “When I”m not painting you”ll find me in the garden or playing my guitar – in between looking after my two children and running a household.”
“When you really love doing something somehow you just find the time and make it happen. “Painting, singing and gardening are my creative outlets. Painting is food for my soul.
“I love becoming so absorbed in my work that I”m not thinking of anything else whereas gardening tends to be when I process my thoughts.
“During the process of painting, when I really get into my “zone” I start to see the painting in my peripheral vision and let intuition guide me.
It's thrilling when this stage occurs and the painting flows, telling me where it wants to go. I go through very prolific stages because I get so excited about what I”m doing.”
Lis Eynon's “Art from the Heart” exhibition is a body of work consisting of 25 paintings. The exhibition at the Creative Tauranga Community Gallery on Willow Street runs from March 23 (opening at 5.30pm) to 13 April 2011.
