John Self

John was born in c 1768 in Somerset .
He married Mary Hillier by banns on the 9 May 1803 at St John
The Baptist Church Chilcompton. Somerset

Both Mary and John signed with a X .
The witnesses to the wedding were Daniel Hollwey and James Purcnell, the Parish Clerk . John's occupation was given as Sojourner .
John joined the 1st Dragon Guards as a Private on 25th June 1792 This is from the Napoleonic War Index
On 29 December 1804 he was admitted as in Inpatient to the Salisbury Infirmary .and discharged on the 19th January 1805
John joined the 17th Dragons on the 22 February 1806 for the Napoleonic war
John, Mary and family lived in Chilcompton
On daughters Elizabeth baptism at Chilcompton in 1816 John is listed as a Labourer .
In 1839 when Daughter Elizabeth marries John's occupation is given as a labourer but in 1849 when daughter Mary marries ,John occupation is given as Soldier
John Died on 18th August 1849 age 81 in Chilcompton and is buried in St John the Baptist church yard with his wife Mary
Children of John and Mary are Isaac b 1805,Valentine b 1814, Elizabeth b 1816 ,Joseph b 1823,Job b 1825
It is interesting to note that in 2010 descendants of daughter Mary still lived in the village of Chilcompton
