Edith was born in Clun Shropshire, the 2nd daughter of William Griffiths and Eliza Rawlings. She had an older sister Kate born 1874 in Leintwardine, Herefordshire, England. Their mother Eliza died in 1882 and their father William married again shortly after. He went onto have another 7 children. Both girls were put out to work as servants . Edith met William when she was working for the same family as his sister Harralina. She sailed to New Zealand in 1906 probably on the Ruepahu. They married at the St Peters Church in Wellington on the 1st December 1906. They lived in Wellington for 7 years then moved to Tauranga to work for the Whakamārama Timber Company living in very primitive conditions. When William had a train accident in May 1915 she was pregnant with her 4th child. The local mmāoriused to bring her food at night and leave in on the doorstep.
