Frustration over Council not purchasing it for park/reserve (Cliff Road Reserve/Redoubt area) ; need for quality control re alcoholic beverages sold at local hotels.
March 1894: Meeting at Whareroa of Mātaatua descendants both local and beyond immediate district ; forthcoming poll re liquor licensing (reduction of publican licenses and accommodation licenses in district) ; Thompsons Track issue ; Dick Seddon’s visit en route and discussion with him re pressing matters eg Thomsons Track and Kaimai road to end isolation of district ; Licensing Act ; outcome of discussions with Premier Seddon. Kaimai Road to take precedence over Thompsons Track as main route out of district.
April 1894: Account of excursion to White Island from Ōpōtiki. Capt Chris Faulkner on board S.S. Fingal ; Burgess Roll and Defaulters list on show to public ; issue re establishment of a school in Ōtūmoetai ; Creamery closing for winter ; discussions re establishment of a telephone bureau ; dredging of harbour “The Narrows” opposite outfall of stream Te Awa of Tukorako (Whareroa)
May 1894: Road Board rates and maintenance of districts roads. Merging of Roads Boards and County Council ; demise of the local Mutual Improvement Society ; telephone bureau/exchange discussions ; maintenance of the old cemetery and discussion re exhuming remains and transferring them to the new cemetery ; pressure to improve/increase the number of primary education facilities in areas outside of Te Papa peninsula: Ōtūmoetai, Te Puna, Te Puna Point, Ōmokoroa.
June 1894: Kaimai Road and Thompsons Track issue. Agitation to get both routes made into proper roads ; Reynolds & Co. Creamery. Discussion re average output per cow in Bay. Low compared to rest of country and need to improve our herds and pastures ; petition re telephone exchange drawn up by Whakatāne Borough Council urging govt re establishment of Ōhiwa bureau. Signed by Whakatāne, Ōpōtiki and Tauranga Councils ; bid to merge Road Boards into County Council fails ; rate struck by Roads Boards re road maintenance in County areas ; using the experimental sheep farm, freezing works and Kaimai Road ideas as examples editor complains Tauranga District gives taxes to central government but receives nothing in return ; call for publication of information booklet for Justices of the Peace so they know basic law ; critical state of County finances ; recovery of large debt from Rotorua County significant part of trouble. Concern over financial management of County ; attempts to establish uplifting community activities after demise of Mutual Improvement Society. Gymnasium Club suggested ; Rotorua debt.
July 1894: Roading within Tauranga borough ; Creamery switching from butter to cheesemaking owing to difficulties maintaining quality while in transit. Frequent temperature changes on journey lead to 2nd grade butter on arrival ; Messrs Shearman and Lundon taking on pig farming for Intra-Marine Supply Company ; Rotorua debt ; state of by-roads in Waimapū Riding and roading subsidies, details spending for district as a whole ; need for protection of old cemetery from sea ; suggestion made re getting goods to market in Auckland on regular basis via dedicated Steamer service ; Tauranga Thames football match.
August 1894: Pig rearing as an adjunct to dairying endorsed by Reynolds & Co. ; Northern Steamship Co. willing to amend schedule to accommodate local produce to Auckland markets ; Noxious Weeds Act ; traffic by-laws. Damage to roads by sleigh type vehicles damage roads and incurr unnecessary costs. Road maintenance discussed ; Government offer of funding for telephone exchange at Ōhiwa minimal. Small outlay/government surplus and huge benefit to area generates bad feeling. Balance to be locally funded ; Clarification re steamership service article, discussion re drainage of Waihī swamp (Little Waihī area) and reclamation for farming. Government considers soil type unsuitable for farming. New report requested by locals ; Licensing Bill ; idea of electoral wards within town boundaries instead of councillors representing all of the town.
September 1894: Rateable value of properties within the borough ; drainage of swamps in Maketū Riding ; Tauranga-Thames mail coaches experiencing difficulties getting completing trip in daylight during winter months. Petition for overnight stops ; Diocese boundaries. Bay of Plenty affiliation with Waiapu (Gisborne)impractical ; alcohol licensing issue ; additional wharf at Mount for holidaymakers sought as stone wharf considered inadequate ; Alcohol licensing issue ; road maintenance
October 1894: Funding of the public baths ; report of Sir John Coote report on dredging and navigation in harbour particularly “the Narrows”. Worth of report questioned. Alternative dredging priorities put forward ; future of Creamery venture in question ; Kaimai road project postponed indefinitely ; idea of an agricultural show put forward ; meeting convened to discuss issue of road access to Waikato. Small amount of government funds released for Thompsons Track but insufficient to complete task. Best route to be debated ; Pāpāmoa, Otawa and Taumata blocks to be opened for settlement. Need to optimise spending of road monies in these areas.
November 1894: application of Abattoirs and Slaughterhouses Act in Tauranga district ; Charitable Aid Board urges the Whakatāne County Council to use “vigilance in connection with the recipients of aid” ; re agricultural show, deplorable lack of support for the local Farmers Club and idea of creating an incorporated society governed by the Agricultural and Pastoral Societies Act (A & P Shows). Part of effort to improve farming production and economic success in region ; maintenance of retaining wall / seawall on Strand.
December 1894: Group of people keen on forming A P & H Society (Agricultural Pastoral and Horticultural Society) ; Opening of railway link Auckland to Rotorua. Idea of larger market for local goods and possible travellers Rotorua –Tauranga by coach positive ; Mr Thomas Lochhead, Secretary of the Farmer’s Club responds to previous article about the club vis a vis agricultural shows. Editor responds to Mr Lochhead ; AGM of Farmers Club. Meeting scheduled for 5th January of all land users to reconstruct existing society along the lines of incorp society under the Act ie. A P & H Society/Show ; new mail route between Tauranga and Rotorua unsatisfactory. Now through Te Puke instead of Oropi ; Editor suggests surplus fruit could be used for canning, jam making or candied peel. Surplus fruit lies rotting on ground at this time of year.
January 1895: Rumour that soon to be opened up Urewara region rich in gold. Improvements to roading important if Tauranga to benefit from possible boom ; formation of the Drainage Board for the drainage of the Matatā-Whakatāne swamp ; control of noxious weeds (Californian thistle) in local pastures and Noxious Weeds Bill ; yachting regatta to be held 19th March by Regatta Club ; Committee issues at Regatta Club
