Betty Johnson was a well-known teacher of piano in the Tauranga area. Her sister, Mrs Mead, gave the Bay of Plenty Registered Music Teachers $2,000 to invest in memory of her sister. The Betty Johnson Memorial Trust was established to provide funds for a scholarship to assist families of limited means with piano tuition fees for the children. It was to be paid directly to the teacher and could only be used for tuition, music books, or examination fees.
