DescriptionDame Evelyn Mary Stokes DNZM (née Dinsdale) was born in Tauranga on 5 December 1936. Evelyn was educated at Tauranga Primary School, Tauranga College, completed her masters at the University of Canterbury in 1959, and completed her PhD at Syracuse University New York in 1963. Evelyn briefly taught at Te Kuiti High School after completing a postgraduate teacher training course. Evelyn became a professor in the school of geography at the University of Waikato and a member of the New Zealand government's Waitangi Tribunal. Evelyn was known widely as a historian who contributed significantly to Tauranga Moana by recording its history through many reports and published materials. Evelyn died on 15 August 2005.
