Bay Canneries commenced operation in Judea, Tauranga, in 1965. Shareholders/partners were Walter Chamberlain, Desmond William Wright, Charles Leslie Reid, Norman Player, Neville Richard Morris. The plan was to focus on Chinese gooseberries initially, then expand operations to include other sub-tropical fruits which were being grown successfully in the Tauranga District, including tree tomatoes.
