From the introduction on page 2:
"During the casebook planning process for the Waitangi Tribunal's Whanganui District Inquiry, the Ngati Rangi iwi claimants approached the Crown Forestry Rental Trust with a proposal to resource the translation of material that could potentially enlighten the Tribunal on the land alienation process in and around the Tongariro National Park. Ngati Rangi iwi were in the possession of a transcribed document known as the "Grace diaries" from which it was hoped that more detail on the gifting of the peaks of Mount Ruapehu and Mount Tongariro and the formation of the Tongariro National Park could be found…
….The Turnbull Library gives the following description of the original material "Letter book of W H Grace (1880-1892) relating to business and Maori land matters, domestic items and accounts paid or due and include letters to Joshua Jones. Also letters in Maori including to Paraihe, Te Mete and others from Rewi Maniapoto ..."
…In terms of its research importance for the Treaty of Waitangi Settlement process, the Grace papers ... have significant research value. In the words of Waitangi Tribunal member and Waikato University Professor of Geography Evelyn Stokes: I do not need to emphasise the significance of the W. H. Grace papers which provide commentary on the "opening up" of the King Country, the Native Land Court and land purchasing activities in the central North Island in the 1880s".
