Map 1: includes ML 539 (1865) A. C. Turner surveyor. Handwritten notes by Alister Matheson with note by Alexi Simmons from Historic Places Trust. James Farrow's trading post, the Catholic church and Māori whares all marked on foreshore area.
Map 2: Negative exposure, of same without notes.
Map 3: Detail from nautical chart of "Upper part of Tauranga Harbr. by F. C. Corbet .... HMS Miranda 1864. Handwritten note upper left "Drury Survey 1852" Catholic Church and Mission at "Otumoeai" marked on foreshore. Markings also on upper level but without notes.
Inset map shows location of Te Papa, Monmouth Redoubt, Durham Redoubt, Mareanui Pa and on the opposite shore Waikari Bay, Matapihi, Makeha? Pt, Aki Inango Bay, Opoutea, Ngaiopapa Pt and Whareroa. Orua mata marked on Welcome Bay side of the Matapihi Peninsula. Welcome Bay/Maungatapu area shows Utimingi, Motu Opuhi, Maungatapa, Whale? Pt and Mongatawha (Mangatawa)

There is a second A3 photograph that can be joined to this item to give a panoramic view of early Matua (including the foreshore area below the houses), Ōtūmoetai and Bellevue. Beyond the houses (Matheson, Snodgrass and possibly Shaw properties) overlooking the harbour are orchards and pastures. Ōtūmoetai ridge runs along the upper left of photograph with the Carlton Street/Ōtūmoetai College/Bellevue areas still being farmed. Some residential development and small orchard holdings visible on the Bellevue side of Ōtūmoetai Road as it goes through upper Cherrywood area. View extends beyond Ōtūmoetai Road towards Greerton and Tauriko areas. Railway line skirting the Matua Saltmarsh and Bellevue, clearly visible. Matua/Ōtūmoetai railway buildings visible.
