Abstract: The role that religion has played in the history of Ngāi Tamarāwaho, especially since the introduction of Christianity, is the focus of this thesis. Missionaries and the new theology that they introduced to Tauranga Moana in the 1820s and 1830s were part of the colonisation process that impacted on the lives of hapu members. As hapu whanau faced a rapidly changing cultural and spiritual environment with the advent of missionaries, colonisation and epidemics they sought spiritual answers to their dilemma. What evolved was an acceptance of Christianity but not in the form that the missionaries had preached. Hapu members instead sought a Māori solution to their problems. The confiscation of lands in Tauranga Moana by the Crown in 1864 compounded the drastic changes to the traditional world view that had already occurred. This led to a general acceptance of Pai Mārire and the Ringatū faiths by the hapu. Later Rātana also found favour with sections of the hapu. But for some whanau within the hapu the Mormon Church provided the answers that they sought, although this was to be a less conservative and more assimilative path than the Māori focussed religions. As different whanau held to their different faiths religious tolerance was a strong aspect of the hapu culture although the potential for disunity was always present.
