Rosie Harper: Solo Exhibition
SummaryRosie Harper is a professional full-time artist, originally from the UK, and recently moved to Tauranga from Wellington. She has exhibited in galleries throughout New Zealand and has exhibited extensively across the UK, Europe and the USA. Rosie paints in her studio in Pyes Pa, Oropi, where she lives with her partner Neil. Main Body
When I ask Rosie to tell me about her art she explains: “My art is usually very detailed and narrative. All of my paintings are created around a fleeting moment in time, an event, or a thought. Music lyrics also play an important role and I have created several pieces that show those lyrics as the story they are trying to say to me. I have a real love affair with oils as I find them an extremely forgiving medium to work with, however, I am beginning to have a flirtation with acrylics, now that I have discovered the wonderful world of 'mediums' to work with them.”
Centre of Attention.
“My Art Deco 'style' has been exhibited extensively in America. I use the creative influences of Salvador Dali and Tamara De Lempicka, just adding my softness to the sometimes hardness that these artists used during the Art Deco period."
This painting 'Centre of Attention' oil on canvas was inspired by a 1930s Manhattan skyline, which is the backdrop for a rather sophisticated lady who is obviously just waiting to be the centre of attention. This painting won an award at The American Art Awards in 2010.”
Two Lost Souls.
“My paintings are by no means the same style, however, as I also paint surreal works that tell my own personal artist story, more contemporary works that will show my mood, and also illustrative colourful art that is purely for the enjoyment factor.
"All of my people are imaginary, I don't use models, but I do use my own photographs for my backgrounds and composition and of course basic material and photographs when composing commissions. I have been very fortunate to have traveled to some wonderful cities to see magnificent architecture and art that keeps me inspired. I have combined surrealism with art deco and nouveau here in 'Two Lost Souls', a painting depicting the lyrics to 'Wish You Were Here' by Pink Floyd.”
“I 'narrate' my work, either in a storybook format or poetry that I write around the art to give the viewer an insight into how the painting speaks to me as I create it. People always have differing views on what an artist is portraying in their work and I often heard those differing views whilst visiting exhibitions and shows, so I thought I would tell people so that they 'no longer had to ponder."
"My solo exhibition at Mt. Maunganui's Zohar Gallery is called 'A Story to Tell' and will have a collection of paintings, all inspired by my poetry, places I have visited, music that moves me, and narratives that I have written specifically for each piece. I am hoping that people will not only enjoy looking at the paintings but will also enjoy reading about them too and perhaps have a bit more of an insight into me and my life so far as an artist.”
Opening day for 'A Story to Tell' is Saturday, July 16, 2011. Rosie will be at Zohar Gallery on July 16 to meet with visitors and to talk about her art. The exhibition runs until July 31, 2011.
