Mandy Williams: Family Moments
SummaryThe ‘New Zealand Art Show’ selected Mandy Williams as one of the artists for its exhibition at the end of July in Wellington. The show is an important one and introduces emerging artists and their work to the public nationally. Main BodyEver since she can remember Mandy has been passionate about art. Working as an art director/graphic artist for 10 years, Mandy started painting after having her first child.
“Having children reminded me of the simple things in life that are so special,” says Mandy.
“Once I had my inspiration it was hard to put my brush down!”
Inspired by the beauty and constant energy of children, Mandy Williams' artwork captures the essence of what it is to be a child; the freedom of riding a bike, the exhilaration of being pushed on a swing, or the joy of hiding under Mum's washing. Since returning to New Zealand her paintings have taken on a subtle New Zealand feel.
Mandy paints with acrylic on stretched canvas using thick texture and many layers to create deep yet vibrant colours.
Her style is constantly evolving as she explores the multitude of possibilities acrylics have to offer. Mandy spends most of her time working on commissioned pieces capturing her client's unique family moments on canvas.
'Butterflies'
'Butterflies' is one of the pieces that was entered into the NZ Art Show Awards and shows a progression of Mandy's style with more detail and softness being evident in her brushwork.
“This piece represents the beauty of life, body, and spirit,” says Mandy.
“The butterfly represents your spirit and the other butterfly represents the spirit that is looking after you.
“Showing that we are both beautiful in body as well as spirit, and we are not all we see.
“I have chosen these colours representing calm and peacefulness with the intention of captivating the viewer,” she explains.

'Wheelbarrow Fun' is a painting showing Mandy's children playing in their backyard. Thick brush strokes capture the energy, excitement, and movement in their fun and games. The colours are rich and thick and her depiction really speaks for itself with brothers and sisters making their own fun and connecting in a simple, special moment.
Mandy likes to include a bit of Kiwiana in her paintings and she often adds flax and the plants we know so well to give them a unique New Zealand feel.
In addition to the NZ Art Show, Mandy will be exhibiting at the Rotorua Creative Arts Trust 2011 Art Exhibition*, August 12-21 and the Bethlehem College Art Exhibition, September 2-4.
