Dave Roy: Our Obsessions Choose Us
Summary“Art for me is about the journey not the destination.” This was one of the observations talented artist and musician Dave Roy made in his studio recently when I visited his and his family's Whakamarama home. Main BodyLooking wrong? Archived here.
There has been an innate honesty and truth in Dave Roy's artistic endeavours over the 21 years he has been engaged in making art. “Our obsessions choose us,” he says.He is well known locally as a sculptor, has exhibited mixed media artworks and paintings in 14 solo shows and 74 group exhibitions. Dave has also recorded eight albums with a group of close friends who are among the Bay's top musicians. I first became drawn to Dave's work comparatively late when I saw his intensely thought provoking and personal mixed media assemblages in the 'Anzac-Lest We Forget 'series (2006) while having a browse on his website.
Broken Hearted We Wait
Since that time the work keeps coming and just recently, in late 2009, Dave offered us his 'Still Seeking Sanity' exhibition at Mills Reef Winery.
'Still Seeking Sanity' gives us the same, “feed the soul and not the wallet”, honesty and is a further Dave Roy art exploration-expressing his highly imaginative ideas and 'take on life' through painting.
The interestingly named 'Still Seeking Sanity' exhibition explores the perplexing questions that need to be posed in this increasingly hectic 'topsy-turvey' modern life of ours .What is normal? What is sane?
By his own disarmingly frank admission Dave is still learning the ways of painting.
“I don't have the audacity to call myself a painter (just yet) but consider myself to be a professional artist who is learning to paint.”
His enthusiasm and interest for this new direction was definitely shared by those I saw in attendance at Mills Reef Winery on the night of the exhibition.
Still Seeking Sanity
Dave Roy's new series ,under the working title of 'Colour of Music', sees Dave immersed in music and art again and follows the exhibition and album 'Under the Influence' of early 2009. The works are to be painted in acrylic and oil with other materials that give texture.
These abstract paintings on canvas and board will be based on songs that have a colour in the title. Dave intends recording another CD with his own interpretation of these songs to accompany the exhibition.
The word prolific springs to mind and as for influences… "It's all around us-in our visual memory banks… and we know that so much of our art comes from art.”I'm really looking forward to experiencing the 'Colour of Music' from one of our region's favourite artists later this year.
