SummaryArtist Jaynice Lace has just completed two years studying art at Bay of Plenty Polytechnic and has graduated with her Aka Rakai Toi – Diploma in Art Level 6. Main Body It was at the Year 2 group exhibition at the downtown Civic Centre Space earlier this month that I first saw Jaynice's intriguing artwork. She has special regard for two of her teachers who taught her during her time at Polytech. James Ormsby helped her to look closely at tonal differences and Tamati Tati about observation. Jaynice credits these two with helping her art evolve from her early naive artistic expression to the more accomplished works she is producing at this time. Jaynice Lace at work in her studio. When asked about her earliest memories in art she says, “Finger painting at kindy was my first true love, and I still use my fingers to swirl or rub materials like paint, binder, pastels or charcoal onto the support I am using as part of my art making process. “I like to touch and connect with my work in this way because it reveals things to me that I see as images or stories.” Before enrolling at art school Janice enjoyed and had begun making sculptural works. Jaynice describes herself as a symbolic artist and one who must create work that is meaningful. “Everything to me has underlying meanings, in levels, as stories that need to come out of me-stories and thoughts that I need to express in my artworks. “As my work reveals itself to me I gain understanding about aspects of myself that are deep in my subconscious. “I enjoy my art when it is beautiful, yet I can be very disturbed by my art when it reveals secrets and hidden memories,” she says. Jaynice is continually experimenting with new materials and working in different mediums. These include coffee glazes and a special recipe with egg-whites that gives a soft and spongy texture that is at the same time durable and lasting. She is hoping to exhibit her work again in the near future and is happy to discuss commissions.
