Lyn Rundle: Back to Art

Like many painters other priorities often take precedence and now that Lyn has retired from teaching she can devote even more time to expressing herself with her paints and brushes.  

Lyn was born in Tauranga and moved back to Tauranga in 1990 after time spent overseas and in Wellington.

She was always interested in art and was raised in a house full of paintings. Many of these works were by E.W.Payton, the first principal of the Elam School of Art in Auckland. 

The paintings provided early inspiration and are a lasting memory.

As a child she always loved drawing and later on Lyn had Indian ink sketches published in the Auckland Herald.   

Art became her favourite subject at high school and Teachers' College.

On returning to Tauranga she worked in pastel at the Harbourside Market.

Lyn likes to paint a wide variety of subjects that usually reflect her interests at a particular point in time. 

Often subject matter is the result of requests for commissions. 

Commission work is once again beginning to play a part in Lyn's art now that she can devote more time to painting. She especially enjoys painting portraits in both pastel and watercolour.

"In past years many lasting friendships have developed between myself and my subjects as a result of close personal interaction during the painting's progress,” says Lyn.

Lyn's depictions of animals and pets are also very sought after. These very accomplished works are a meaningful way of preserving precious memories for their owners.

After the exacting nature of painting portraits she has decided to explore new styles and to free up her technique as part of her evolving art practice. At present Lyn is working in oils and returns to her paintings of animals and portraits when asked.

"I love their creamy texture and brilliant colour possibilities oils offer and when I'm painting strongly lit subjects,” she says

Now that Lyn has returned to painting I look forward to seeing new directions as she pursues her lifelong interest and new ways of expressing herself artistically.
