SummaryLocated at 5 Dive Crescent, Tauranga. Railway-wharf cargo building, constructed 1925–1927 after harbour-edge reclamation for rail and port works; extended in 1954. Single-storey steel-frame structure, originally with concrete slab floor, corrugated iron roof and wall cladding; later extensions included concrete walls. In full use after the East Coast Main Trunk reached Tauranga in March 1928.
Designed for cargo transfer between coastal vessels, rail wagons, shed storage and motor trucks, with sliding doors to the wharf and truck landing to Dive Crescent. Tauranga’s main coastal-shipping cargo hub for about 40 years. Use declined from the 1960s. Poranui was the last Northern Steamship Company coaster at Railway Wharf, March 1965. The Tauranga Harbour Bridge, opened 13 March 1988, ended larger-vessel access south of Sulphur Point. Although the railway wharf was partly demolished; the shed survived.
