MEMBERS OF JAZZ-A-PLENTY Brian Geoghan: like most brass players, started in brass bands at the age of 10. Has played all sorts of music with all sorts of groups. Singing is a recent addition to trumpet. Also Man Friday who does all the organising chores for the band. A real jazz enthusiast, he is heavily involved with the Jazz Festival. His broad taste in music includes the classics. Paul Sanders: started piano and cornet at 8 years. Took up the trombone at 11 and played in many North England brass bands. Plays regularly with many different groups including the Waikato Symphony Orchestra, Dr Jazz and Bourbon St. Ramblers. Paul also plays saxophone, trumpet, cello and has been known to sing. He is a full-time brass teacher and has survived conversion to full time kiwi. John Nicholson: started on clarinet at age 17. Later took on saxophone and flute. Early experience was in small dance bands. Was absent from the music scene for 10 years. Returned to jazz and all that in Tauranga, 1975. Played in the Tauranga Big Band and helped put Jazz-a-Plenty together. Loves all music but first love is jazz. Blows a cool flute when the spirit moves. Jeff Smith: as with most of the group, started playing in brass band at the age of 11, on Euphonium. Six months later, added piano to his curriculum (said to be the only pupil who could put four fingers on one note). He began playing in restaurants at the age of 16 and later, attracted by the bright lights of Australia, went to Brisbane where he made his living, aided and abetted by the piano, for two years. Had an interest in jazz, but it was not until he came to Tauranga that the seduction was culminated. An agile performer. He sings, too. Jack Claridge: a drummer in mid-teens, Jack then took to bass, playing in bands for Nip Spring, Ken Avery and Bill Hoffmeister before founding Claridges Cabaret in Lower Hutt. There, with his own group, he broadcast live every Saturday night — a first in music in New Zealand. During that time he also took up Vibraphones and backed many overseas and New Zealand artists. Paul Hills: irreverently called 'the old fellow', he started playing drum in Lower Hutt Civic Band as part of the Home Guard in 1941. Played in Air Force bands and groups and was a founder member of the post-war A.F. band under Dick Simpson. Has played ever since with the exception of five years at end of seventies. Called back to help out for the 1982 Festival and has been at it ever since. Believes drums often underrated. Ambition for his own band — 50 drums and muted violin.
