In warm and brilliant weather, the setting of the Hairini Marae was perfect when the Governor-General, Sir Bernard Fergusson, arrived to open the new Ranginui meeting house. It is the first meeting house in Tauranga to be fully carved both inside and out, the work of Messrs T. Tukaokao (Tauranga), T. Taepa (Rotorua) and J. Taiapa (Tikitiki). The house has taken about 15 years to build at an approximate cost of 18,000 pounds and several thousand Māori from local and neighbouring tribes were present at the colourful ceremony."
