Reference NumberPhoto 07-234DescriptionTauranga Orchestra and choir, c 1940s (or 1950s), at the end of a performance. Handel's Messiah, most likely from 10 December 1951, the third annual performance of the work by the Tauranga Harmonic Society and members of the Tauranga Orchestral Society. The Bay of Plenty Times of 13 December said that it showed 'a marked improvement' over the previous performances. The conductor was Mr Ernest Dawson, who, the Times declared, had 'done yeoman service to the district in bringing the society to its present stage of development, and has enriched and stimulated musical consciousness greatly'. The soloists were (left to right), tenor Roger Errington, soprano Dorothy Hopkins, contralto Miriam Gardner, and bass Lloyd Spears. Miss Gardner, a young singer, was called in at the last minute as Hilda Pinfold, the original performer, was ill. She acquitted herself well. Orchestral players who have been identified by readers are: front row - violinist on extreme left, Albert Riley; next to him, Barry Partridge; first violin Stuart Petersen; violinist beside him, Jo Hammond; pianist Clarice Ford; conductor, Ernest Dawson; cellist, Arthur Spedding; bass player, Cyril Partridge, father of Barry Partridge; bass player on extreme right, Paul Wishart. In the middle, left to right, we have an unidentified player; next, Dale Petersen; French horn, Bob Brockway; then Jim Davies in the striped suit; Russell Smith; unidentified. Sadly, most of the choir remain unidentified. However, of the men in the back row, second from the left is Ben Watson, second from the right, Alan Greenaway, with Jim Greenaway on the extreme right. In the front row of men, John Mollgaard is third from the left. The lady on the extreme right of the second row from the front has been named as Mrs Kiddie, with Hazel Bett on the end of the row directly behind her. Front row ladies, left to right, Doreen Decke, Violet Watson, unknown, Jean Murdoch. Second row from front ladies, far left, Grace Winwood. Acc No 1865
