Reference NumberPhoto 16-033DescriptionScanned copy of a portrait of Mary Margaret Stubbing nee Bowie (1819-1894). Noted with file "Mary Margaret Bowie was born in Scotland in 1819. She married Benjamin Stubbing of llford, Essex, in Scotland in 1836. They had a family of 9 children - Margaret, William, Benjamin, Arthur, Walter, Malcolm, Alice, Donald and Frank. From Scotland they travelled down to Plymouth, where in 1858 they boarded the ship "John Scott" and sailed for New Zealand under an immigration scheme which provided land for them on their arrival in 1859. After landing in Auckland the family left for Raglan, a trip made by schooner which took them 6 weeks. They had to walk from Raglan to their land at Temata which was further from the town than any other residents. In 1863 the Government recalled them on account of the danger of attack by the waring Māori tribes. The family then settled in Parnell, Auckland where Benjamin died 3.12.1867, just eight years after emigrating. Mary Margaret remained in Stanwell Street Parnell until her death at the age of 75 on 17.3.1894. She was buried in the grounds of the Chapel of Stephen the Martyr, Judges Bay, Auckland where her grave can be seen today." From a family collection. No known copyright.
