Original scanned photograph was accompanied by the following metadata: " Scanned photograph taken July 11 1909, the day following the unveiling of the Tauranga Military Cemetery Memorial. Handwritten on reverse: “Geo Asher - his father, Mayor - , T. Clark -, Canon Jordon”. In another hand “JH McCaw back, bowler hat to left of lady” and “Mr Matheson front with cap”. Accompanying the photograph is an August 1959 newspaper article titled “Photograph Records 1909 Ceremony”. It reads : From a reader has come a picture taken the day the memorial of the Tauranga Military cemetery was unveiled 50 years ago last Saturday – July 11, 1909. Many regiments are represented in the photograph by those who subsequently saw service in the First and Third Waikato Militia and later in the Armed Constabulary against Te Kooti and his followers. Included in the group in the photograph are men from HM ships Curacoa, Miranda. Esk, Harrier and Eclipse; men from the First Waikato Militia who saw action at Irihunga Whakamārama during three engagements in 1867; and men of the 68 Durham Light Infantry who fought at Gate Pā and Te Ranga. In the photograph are G.W. Eyre, who served in the Crimea War, Paddy Herbert, who was a defender at Lucknow., and four South African War veterans, A. Leslie, W.J. McKay, A. Mathieson and either J.R. or W. Page. Also shown is Captain A. A. Crapp who held the NZ Cross for gallantry. Only one of the men in the photograph has not been identified. The others are named as Captain Tovey Tennant, S. Reeve, J.H. Mccaw, Hanah Eyre, J. D. Brain, W. Earl, Canon Jordan (then Mayor of Tauranga), J. Ransley, F. Moon, Sergeant Davoren, Hori Ngatai, A. Dickie, D. Asher, H. Knowles and E. Howell. The monument commemorates the soldiers and sailors who lost their lives in the Māori wars and were buried, at Tauranga."
