Text describes the conversion of an existing Māori track into the hills into an access road for the military settlement of Tauranga. Surveyors laid out wide streets, but the central shelled pathway left broad verges browsed by household cows. Trees had cages to protect them from the stock.
Contrasted with an aerial view of the now very busy road leading to the Ōtūmoetai causeway, with a bowling green and running track/rugby field to the west of the road and many buildings to the east.
