Converted to the Anglican faith by the Missionaires, Cheif Taiaho Ngatai built his private chapel on tribal land at Matapihi. After his death his followers converted to the Ratana faith and his church fell into disrepair. The tukutuku, kowhaiwhai panels and decorative rafters from the chapel have been incorporated in the Village Chapel._x000D_

The chisel in the Village Chapel wall was found in the walls of Cheif Taiaho's chapel when it was dismantled._x000D_

Materials from other historical buildings were utilised in the building of the Village Chapel._x000D_
Stained glass windows at the rear of the chapel are from Whangamata_x000D_

The window above the altar is from the Taliaman Hotel in Katikati._x000D_

The clear cut windows came from St Enoch's Church in Tauranga and the Anglican Church in Mangatapu._x000D_

The doors are from the Catholic Church at Maketu._x000D_

A mural at the rear of the church by Joan Moore, was unveiled by the Hon H. Lapwood, Minister of Tourism, on August 28 1977._x000D_

The mural symbolises the coming together of two races, Maori and Pakeha, through Christianity._x000D_
